I really want to lose some weight, but I really don't know how to? HELP ME!!?

Basically I am 5ft 1 and naturally curvy, the problem is, I am a pear shape (big thighs, hips and bum), but small on top. Thats okay, but my issue is that I have a bit of fat around my stomach and my love handles. I am a size 8 so im not huge, but I just dont know how to loose it? I know that my thighs won't decrease because its all muscle in my thighs. Its just my stomach which is the issue.
I've read that you should not eat so many carbs, but does that mean no brown carbs aswell?
I have joined a gym, but I basically dont know what I am doing haha.
