How can a friend or family member try to help someone with depression?

Hmm, are you close with your sister and how old is she?
Try to start a conversation. Maybe be honest and say that you accidently heard them and that, of your sister wants it, she can talk to you? That's what I would do. I was in a depression last year, and my mother really let me feel that i could talk to her about it and that i was not a burden. Try to do the same maybe? :)
That's one thing I'm worried about. My sister and I are twins (triplets to be precise) but we aren't that close. I'm worried she would just blow me off
If you aren't that close, there is always z chance she doesn't want to talk. I think the best thing you can do is try and assure her that you want to help her or just be there for her.
Ok thanks!
i wrote a take about this actually. being there to support someone who is depressed. you can ago ahead and read it if you want to get some tips?
