Well, there are several things to try; maybe individually to pin point what works:
1) Drink a LARGE glass of water before bed every night. Water helps regulate your sleep cycle.
2) Turn off all "screens" (iPhone, TV, etc...) at least an hour before bed.
3) Make sure it's dark enough in your room, as light disrupts sleep.
4) Make sure you are exercising enough every day.
5) Make sure you are eating right/take melatonin supplements to help regulate your sleep cycle.
6) Make sure you have a proper mattress! That's what did it for me. I'd always wake up around 3 every morning, and could never fall back asleep until I got a proper mattress.

I usually have some sound around in my room, it used to be my computer but nowdays it's my fan. I don't like when it's too quiet.
But that's probably just me haha.
Anyways, I usually play games or with some app on my phone or android tablet or read on the internet on my tablet. Reading overall helps a lot to make you feel more tired and if you lie down in your bed, you relax much more.
Don't drink too much coke or other caffeine beverages, it will make it a bit harder to sleep (for me the caffeine kicks in at late evening/night).

making sure I am exhausted by the end of the day. if gym doesn't cut it then i'll exercise a bit more.
I would NOT advice you to take sleeping pills as later it grows to addiction.
If you dont feel asleep, try to calm and relax yourself by listening to soft music.
Avoid sleeping at day time and avoid alcohol or smoke before goin to bed.
P. S- I too am goin through this shit.. it sucks but I think I've been improving :)I don't know.. I usually go to bed at 10 and sleep at 12. Then I wake up at 3 or 4
So I usually just try to sleep at 8 because it takes so long. Just turn off the lights turn off your phone, turn everything off

I stay up until I'm very very tired. And if that doesn't work I take a sleeping pill.
