Why has being 6ft+ become an obsession for guys and since when?

Is it just me that's beginning to notice this height obession with guys? Even my father has this dilusional idea that my younger 13 year-old brother will be 6ft+. One time he kept on saying how he'll tower all of us (including him) at some point.

-First, hardly any male in my family is overly tall and there are many shorter member (more short members on my mother's side though).
- At the rate he's going and apparently slowing down, I calculate my 5'11 father is still going to be taller than him and what's wrong with that?
- He's still either at my height or slightly shorter and has been for a while and again what would be wrong with having a sister that's not too short? He got annoyed at only narrowly being my height.
- What's wrong with a guy being being under 6ft? I've been in a relationship with my then boyfriend who was slightly under 5'8 (I'm 5'7 myself and didn't really care, that's definitely not reason I'm no longer with him)
- He wasn't too focused on whether I'll be a short, average or tall girl while growing up, yet he has been too focused on my brother's height
- Many of my female family members are with guys shorter than 6ft so where did this ''6ft+'' obsession came from?

Somewhere a long the line, 6 feet became the cutoff between tall and short for guys. Not sure why, it just did. I see guys freaking out about being 5'10 and it's like "relax, dude, you're fine." People just like to be able to say they're "6 feet tall." It reminds me of when I talk to guys who want to claim what great athletes they are or were, and when it comes to speed, a 4.3 second 40 Yard Dash time is what every single one seems to say. I heard it a lot when I still played semipro football. I feel like a lot of dudes felt like they couldn't just hear that I played, they had to chime in with how they used to play football, but they just can't play these because of this or that excuse. Don't get me wrong, I don't think any less of them, but I definitely felt like some guys felt insecure or one-upped when they found out I played, and just HAD to say something. It usually came up while I was at work bouncing or managing at this bar, and I think a dude with a drink in his hand and girls in the vicinity just needed to say something to look impressive, haha. Little did they know that semi-pro is like Pop Warner, just for grown-ups😂 But anyway, there's always that guy who needs to chime in and talk about how he was a wide receiver back in high school, and they always --ALWAYS-- would claim "I used to run a 4.3." Shit up, bro, no you didn't. That's like NFL speed, you'd be playing AT LEAST some level of college football if you were that type of athlete. My housemate in college actually DID play in the NFL, as a wide receiver, and he didn't even clock a 4.3. But somewhere, like with 6-feet as a height, 4.3 speed just became the perceived benchmark for elite status, so I think people tend to exaggerate to get there.

Well said... I agree. It has become exaggerated. Though I've have notice the cutoff has increase for a few guys. There was a guy that was already 6ft but he wanted to be 6'2.

an obsession with guys? it seems more like it was an obsession with all the girls, and the SHORTER guys are obsessed or maybe not obsessed but just really desire to be taller. if anything, the reason guys want to be taller is because women desire taller men.

Tall men are more likely to be hired as opposed to short men. They're more likely to be paid more. They're more respected. They're more likely to hold positions of leadership. More likely to be promoted. More likely to be successful with women. More likely to get discounts at stores, better deals on cars... it goes on. My source? A sociology class on gender in society.

Is this true on the small scale? Will you notice it in your personal life? Eh... probably not. But it's true on a large scale.

Of course, they only are concerned about their success with women - because they're men so they think with the head that's not on their neck :p

I think they just want to be able to say 6 feet instead of 5 feet something, because it's setting them apart from women who can mostly only say 5 feet something.

On the metric scale, they strive to be 180cm+.
For those who don't know 6ft = 183 cm. 180 is 'merely' 5'11.

Father's always do that it's like a pride thing. Like Hey my son is 5'9 right now pretty soon he'll be like 6'2 then he'll be 6'5 and that's way taller than your son rob he's only 6'1 right now. It's guy talk to me. It was done in my family I'm 6'1 but I got sick and the medicine stopped my growth but my family is tall my little cuzzin is 14 I think and he's 6'5 but we always knew he'd be big.

I also think girls are more obsessive over tall men than men are. Online they ask guys about their height all the time and sometimes only date 6ft and up thus making men self conscious about height.

Most girls don't think like you. Most girls care about a guy's height. Many will say that they don't, but just like with penis size, they WILL start to care if a guy is significantly less than average.

Its because many girls prefer a guy who's over 6 feet. Its more attractive. So guys want to be over 6 feet.

Honestly I have no clue. I'm 5'10" and I'd rather be 2 inches shorter than I am now because it would mean bumping my head off of things so much less. Being even taller? No way.

I wish i'm taller than my height and reach 6'0" or 6'1"... I'm only 5'10" I feel short compared to todays generation... most people said my height is fine but I'm more attracted to tall women than short. So a couple of inches might help :(

Not everyone gets a growth spurt in the mid-late teens. That depends on genes in the family, whether most members were taller, average or shorter. In my family, me father claimed to stop growing when he was 13/14 and a couple others (males) stopped between ages 16-18. For the females it was 12-14 or 15.

I refuse to let facts make me lose faith!! Nah jk. I know a lot of it is dependent on genes but I never really looked into it. My mom's 5'4ish and my dads about 6'0 but I've never asked about when he hit growth spurts so I guess I won't know until I know.

Your mom is the same height as mine. I didn't even ask, they actually told me themselves when they stopped growing. But yes you'll never know. You might suddenly grow in a year or like me (was at 5'3 or a bit under when I first started my period), add those inches at a slower pace that you don't even notice right away.

If it took me till 12th grade and a couple months shy of turning 18 to reach 5'7 and I'm woman, then I guess you can grow too.

It's been that way for a long time actually looks better for guys to be taller I wish I'd made it to six foot I only made it to 5'10"
