Are there more depressed and mentally ill men than women in the world?

Are there more depressed and mentally ill men out there because of the pressures men have to go through in life. We have to have a good career and be able to attract girls etc. More men seem to be alcoholics or drug abusers, more men appear to be homeless and go down a slippery slope after divorce. Also women seem to handle depression better too and don't commit as many suicides.

More women attempt to commit suicide, but more men actually kill themselves.

When men suffer inside of themselves, who cares? Nobody. Nobody cares, until they snap and end up going on killing sprees.

Of the two Columbine shooters, only one was actually a Sociopath intent on doing harm - Eric Harris. The other shooter, Dylan Klebold, was just a normal kid suffering from severe depression. FBI psychologists say that if Klebold was not dragged along with it, he would've grown up and had a normal life. Eric Harris on the other hand, would have lived a life of crime.

My point is that we are not helping these people get better, only cursing them when they finally lash out.

Studies say men have poorer support systems I believe. For me, I was depressed for a long time and I felt extremely trapped. I couldn't confide in anyone because frankly... nobody cares about a depressed guy. I really needed a hug, I really needed someone to listen to me for a bit, that's ALL I needed to give me strength.

I think women tend to go through depression the most. However man do seem to lead a very streessfull life, with wok and financial issues driving them crazy. I know for a fact that many men have committed suicide, because they couldn't handle the pressure any longer and they thought it was easier to just die (I'm guessing). Who knows what anyone goes through? But again don't you have to have some kind of depression on the first place to end up committing suicide?

Depends on the society. More woman then men commit suicide in China.

It's hard to know, because we don't know who has depression, we only know who seeks treatment for depression.

More women are treated for depression.

Men are more likely to externalize their feelings. Alcohol and various violent tendencies linked to depression are more common in men.

Obviously, men commit suicide far more often than women do.

Statistically no, women are more likely to be depressed. Men are more likely to go through with suicide though.
