My baby is extremely under weight and my girlfriend is due any day now?

On Monday we went for a check up because my girlfriend wasn't feeling good so they did a check on the baby and they took the babies weight and the baby is only 4.9lbs, the doctors said its worrying because she's due so soon, which as got the both of us stressed out because she's convinced the baby is going to die! They told her to eat more but she can't eat because she's so stressed. I want to know is it okay if babies are that small?
and will she live?

Babies can live even under that weight scale, and can die over it. Life and death is not really determined by how much the baby weighs. Your girlfriend should have forced herself, honestly. I know that sounds kind of blunt and maybe even over the top... but a pregnant woman cannot not eat, or eat very little when pregnant if they want a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. Now, if she is due any day, is too late.. What I mean by that is hat she can't just eat a shitload in these few days and expect the babies weight and health to change drastically. But I would say not to worry about the life of your child in this case. There may be precautions taken after birth to ensure that baby will grow as needed, but I am 99.9% sure your baby will be fine. Update after birth!

It would help to also know if her and your family are smaller people? If she had high blood pressure during pregnancy? And if she has a disease that the baby may have inherited?

The only thing she had was bulimia but that's gone now. I think!

I was told my older child was a little over 3lbs the day before he was born & he was 8lbs, 9ozs... I don't know what they weighted but it wasn't my baby -lol. Tell her not to worry about it until she has to. I've met a lot of people with stories like mine also.

"Very low birthweight" infants are 3 lb 5z or less. Your baby is small but will do well.

The fact doctors have already picked up on this gives your baby a much better chance so they can take precautions during the birthing just in case. Bigger babies do do better, but smaller babies aren't doomed, especially these days. It's not a terrible weight, just a little small, and the doctors will take adequate measures to help too.

Meh, I was roughly that size when I was born, though it's true I was born premature... But it's probably fine. I think they get quite a bit bigger in the last week or so.

First babies are always the smallest. I wouldn't worry. The doctors would have done more if they were really worried.

Our son wasn't that small, he was 5.5lbs he was tiny in size but the doctors said he was okay

I weighed 5 pounds when I was born, if your girlfriend has been taking care of herself your baby will be fine. <3

Don't worry. Within the last few weeks of pregnancy the baby puts on a lot weight of weight. As much as 250 gr per week which is roughly half a pound. Just tell her to relax and eat healthy. Even if god forbid the baby should be underweight it's not 100 years go... It won't die! You'll just end up with a skinny baby!
