If you can't keep up with most team members you might not even get a chance to play. But you're 17, it's a good time to start working out and be part of a team sport even if you aren't the most fit one there. You can always go join a gym or use the weights at the school
You should go for it, I dropped out of my HS volleyball team cus I was a little chubby. Looking back now I wish I hadn't I miss playing it and want to start again. GO for it!
the simple answer is that being more trim can help in sports but there are examples of athletes who were over the "usual" weight associated with that sport who had phenomenal transformative careers
Yes girls can be catty but you're doing this for your own interest so their opinons shouldn't matter. If problems arise then you can always go to a staff.

You can be too fat to play the sport competitively but you can still play it. Well unless of course you're one of those people who have gotten so fat they can't leave the bed.

Though teams usually have tryouts... if you have a good chance, go for it. Don;t let being "chubby" deter you :)

I am speaking out of regret. I let it keep me from doing a lot in high school. Sports, dating, dances... and I feel like I missed out on a lot.

Go for it! I was in volleyball once and the thickest girl in the grade decided to join it. She was great at it. You might really like it.

Are you already running or doing some other kind of cardio? If so, that ought to burn fat and help to build stamina. Have fun on the team:)
