To eat or not to eat?

Okay I need to know if I should eat before I go to the gym? I know that a 1200 calorie diet is good to loose weight how is a 1500 calorie diet? If I don't eat before I go to the gym and I burn 500 calories should I eat back the 500 calories, or do I stick with the 1200 calorie diet?
