you should eat 1500-1800 calories a day 1200 is not enough also the rule is eating an hour before a work out something small and then you should eat withen an hour after a workout something with protien. I work at a gym so I actual know what I am talking about.

calories are still calories no matter when you eat them but personally I wouldn't eat right before working out cause you might start to not feel well, like when they say wait a half hour before swimming if you ate something.

eating after the gym is much better. I don't know why but it's something about your calories still being burned even after you excersise :) so yeah, right after the gym is good
definitely eat a bit before going to the gym so you can't waste all your energy
