Do you eat food after the "eat by"?

I usually eat (fresh) food as long as it looks, smells and tastes good. Seems fairly normal to me but my boyfriend kinda shocked. I can't be the only one though, right?

Thing is my uncle manages a grocery store that belongs to a chain and every night they throw out food that passed the sell by date or eat by date (sometimes even the day before).
And somehow the company doesn't allow them to give it to charity, so he let's hi employees take home what they want and sometimes he gives me some things too. All unofficially of course. Nothing wrong with that, right?
It's free food, it saves resources and reduces waste

About 70% of it is fresh fruits and vegetables, the other 29% is dairy and eggs and a very small percentage of processed food
It's not dangerous, it's still good food. It's ridiculous they're not allowed to give it to charity
