You can lose more quickly at the beginning but losing more than 1-2 pounds a week prevents your skin from shrinking and can cause permanetly flabby skin that will need to be removed. It happens with a lot of gastric bypass people they have skin that has to be surgically removed after they have lost weight because they lost too fast. So slow and steady is what's recommended unless you have several extra grand lying around to spend on surgery. Trust me last thing you want is to lose weight and have like 20lbs of flab hanging from your stomach ala Kate Goslin.

Yes, it's normal to lose a larger amount of weight when you first start dieting. This is because you lose a lot of "water weight" at first.
Also, the heavier you are, the more weight you might drop in pounds (since 8 lbs is a lower percentage of weight if you weigh, say, 200 lbs, compared to if you weigh 130 lbs).
Healthy weight loss is generally considered 1-2 lbs a week. You may lose more than that in the beginning, but your weight loss will generally slow down as you get further along in your progress.
