“I have not drank alcohol since ___ but I do still cook with vanilla extract and I did eat some rumballs last weekend.”… The topic is SOBER. BEING SOBER. Correct me if I’m wrong because I don’t know much about alcohol, but is that not still getting damn near drunk? Is that not like taking a shot of alcohol? Isn’t that about the same as I don’t smoke weed but I eat edibles? Is this not manipulative to tell someone you’re no longer drinking and not expect them to realize that you may not be drinking but you’re still getting intoxicated through food? Fck i wish I would have caught on sooner. #FeelFreeToList
he's been lying to himself and too others too much that... he cannot longer see a lie as a lie
you will, because they will be lies, but to him... it's not a lie, it no longer feels like one

It is. Recovering alcoholics are fairly careful of rum balls. (I am more serious than I might appear). A friend is currently in recovery with 11 years to go.

As long as he won't as k for help having realization what is happening, you can't help. Don't even try. Alcohol and drugs have this effect on people's minds. They made them crave, so to keep a weak mind in tact the owner starts to lie to themselves and others around.
Don't put yourself into it. As long as he won't take clear steps (AA group, regular doctors check ups, etc) you should keep yourself away. Away away...
Take care of yourself, Dizzy
You won't get drunk from eating a few rum balls. But the danger of an alcoholic eating them is, the smell and flavor makes them crave alcohol. Alcoholics need to stay away from anything that reminds them of alcohol.
Lots of people can enjoy the taste of alcohol. I really enjoy a glass or two of good (not cheap) wine, or a cocktail, or some other beverage once in a while. There is not one thing wrong with that at all. I even use wine in cooking.
But alcoholics crave alcohol. When they start drinking, they can't stop until they are smashed. It's like people who are addicted to sugar. They can't stop at one cookie. They keep eating until the box is empty and then go searching for anything else to eat that's full of sugar.
So don't confuse alcoholics with normal people. Alcohol is actually very enjoyable if used in moderation. It's nothing to be paranoid about.I cook using alcohol. I have a friend who has a drinking problem and if that friend is going to be there I can't use it in the food.
Even though after cooking there's zero alcohol left, just the taste of it. For an alcoholic that can be enough to trigger a relapse.
The first issue is they need to acknowledge that they have a problem.I think there is a vast difference between enjoying alcohol and being an alcoholic.
If you can take or leave it, drink in moderation once you start and don't rely on alcohol to function then I would say you enjoy it.
If you see/smell/taste alcohol and need to drink, always drink to excess or need a drink to get through the day then you are an alcoholic.
A non-alcoholic can drink to excess on occasion just like someone without an eating problem can overeat at Christmas.Cooking with alcohol doesn't actually infuse the food with it. It serves as a flavor enhancer.
Its like here in the Midwest we boil brats and hotdogs in beer because in infuses extra flavor, but the alcohol just burns or vaporizes away.
I do see what your concern is though. That is if the guy in question is still actually drinking after saying he doesn'tUsing vanilla extract in a recipe is hardly enough alcohol to have an effect on you unless you use extreme amounts. Eating rumballs though is clearly a different story. There are pure vanilla extracts that contain no alcohol and alcohol free mouthwash as well. If someone is really serious about zero alcohol, they would find those options.
Alcoholics (and probably other addicts too) have an amazing talent of lying to themselves. I am not completely against alcohol, but I hate sloppy and agressive drunks.
Woah, this guy sounds seriously messed up. Claiming to be sober but still getting drunk through food? That's not cool at all. And changing his story so many times, no wonder you don't trust him. If he was really serious about quitting he'd go to AA like you said. Sounds manipulative to me too. I think you're right to be suspicious of him, this sneakily getting drunk stuff is shady. He needs to be honest with himself and others if he really wants help. Just my two cents! Tough situation.
Sorry what the first one? Vanilla extract is like alcohol? How?
Not smoking and edibles I so get yes but rum balls?
I think the alcohol mostly evaporates leaving the taste so no way to get drunk but close to drinking?
Congrats it's hot! 🔥
When you cook with alcoholic beverages the alcohol boils off. So no its not the same as long as its cooked. It just leaves behind the taste. So a rum ball that is soaked after cooking is alcoholic, while if rum was only added to the batter it is not.
I know that when you cook with alcohol the alcohol cooks out and you’ll still have that flavor but there’s no alcohol. Rum balls have rum in them but the alcohol should be getting cooked out. You’re not gonna get drunk off rum balls or vanilla extract or even feel buzzed.
If you consume alcohol you just do, no matter the way you consume it.
He gotta be upfront and honest with you I mean how else can you help/support if he’s lying ya know.
There's low levels of alcohol naturally occurring in some food. Even non-alcoholic beer and wine can technically still have low levels of alcohol. I wouldn't consider any of that "cheating" on sobriety.
It's a bit of a gray area, innit? See, saying you're sober but still cookin' with vanilla or munchin' on rum balls, it's like saying you don't drink but still have a cheeky shot. Some might say it's a bit dodgy, like saying you don't blaze but love your edibles.
It's a sly move, really. Like, why not be straight-up about it? No need for all the smoke and mirrors. If someone's playin' those tricks, it's best to clock it early. No one wants to be caught nappin', fam.
He is just a dry drunk if he is not working the steps so they say… but I am sure you could find others that would agree with him. Like those who are trying to stop smoking and chewing nicotine gum… It is like, I am going to quit smoking crack and just snort the cocaine instead….. lol.
Some people go around it but alcohol is boiled out in cooked food just like when people put wine or beer in the recipe but there is alcohol in some cough medicine. As for weed and edibles , that’s like saying I didn’t inhale, lol
Damn, I don't know Desii, he's already been lying so much according to you.. Might be time to start doing some thinking.. If you haven’t already..
When you cook with alcohol, the alcohol is actually burned off. You have the flavor of it but not the actual alcohol
He is drinking vanilla extract straight from a bottle?
