I was EXACTLY like you! My metabolism, I worked out, was that of a woman my height that was 92kgs... I was 47kgs... How messed up is that?! Birth control REALLY helped slow my metabolism down. Slow it down then build muscle and drink protein shakes. Counting calories will also help you out, another thing to do is get a diary and record, record, record. So you don't lose motivation. I'm going to give you 2 websites I've used for a very VERY long time to help me.
link - Body Fat Percentage
link - Calorie counter
and here's my article on the topic - link hopefully you can find some help with that.

Find wnat your BMR is, basically how much it takes to maintain your weight, and add in about 500 extra cals per day.
Do this by adding in a few extra things at each meal. More protein, more fruits and veggies. Definitely whole grain too, rice and beans.
dont just chug protein shakes, shakes aren't cheap. milk is just as effective
now if you start working out "and by working out I mean lifting heavy weights not watching TV on the tredmill and swining around pink 5lb dumbbells" then you should gain some weight, some will be fat but most should be muscle provided you are drinking lots of milk or protein shakes.
just remember. to much protein if your body isn't used to it will throw your whole systme out of wack so work up to it, as a rule 1g per lb of bodyweight
More protein means more sustained muscle growth. When he says you need to gain weight, he's suggesting that most of that weight be muscle since fat isn't always a good thing (though you do need a good chunk of it).
If you were to supplement your meals with protein, you'll maintain muscle mass. If you're working out at the same time, even better. You'll gain muscle as well.

yeah, more protein and generally hearty kinds of food are good. start working out. muscle adds more weight than fat. plus you're getting in shape, which is always a good thing.
The guy is an idiot.
I can give you way better advice.Gradually increase your calorie intake by about 1-200 everyday per week.
