Strength training for losing weight?

I'm about 20kg overweight , 189cm (6'2") and my goal is to change my body into a more muscular one. I've been weight training for almost a month now and keeping cardio to a minimum (because I read cardio can take muscle from your body) so my question is, should I slim down by just concentrating on cardio and then start trying to "beef up" or to just keep what I'm doing now which is focusing on building muscle?
