What's your smile like?

I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they smile.

I smile with my mouth closed. It's actually more a smirk/subtle smile. I think it fits better with my cynical/ironical nature. Plus I'm naturally pessimistic so I don't really have an "OMG I'm SO DAMN HAPPY!" smile.

It originated back when I was a young boy, I had crooked teeth and I had to use all sorts of braces and headgear to fix my teeth, so I didn't like smiling and showing my teeth. Nowadays I have good teeth but the habit stuck and eventually became part of my personality.

Everything about the smile is fake. He's just using the muscles around his mouth, a real smile uses all facial muscles, mostly noticeable around the eyes like here link

Secondly his smile is asymmetrical. The only emotion that looks asymmetrical is contempt (which that smile is showing by the way), if other facial expressions are asymmetrical it means they are faked.

You're talking about what emotions the smile expresses. Obviously the conventional emotion is joy or happiness. But it's not less authentic if the smile is used to express a different sentiment and it's horribly one dimensional to say that smiles should be limited to happiness. Smiles can be used to cover up sadness, to express irony, to express pleasure, cruel satisfaction, etc.

No, you're wrong. A spontaneous, real smile only happens with happiness. Covering up sadness means a fake smile, and the sadness will always leak through (most often micro-expressions), irony is a smirk.

Pleasure and satisfaction are sub-emotions of happiness.

If any other emotion is felt during that smile, it's a fake smile. Disagreeing with this means disagreeing with experts that spent years studying emotions and facial expressions.

Your usage of "fake" simply means "not indicative of happiness." It's an unreasonably one dimensional. But have it your way. I don't have any particular attachment to "authenticity" if its expressed in the way that "experts that spent years studying emotions and facial expressions" say it is. I'm obviously speaking in a colloquial context, not a professional one.

Fake means not real. A smile that uses only the mouth is not real. This guy spent 2 years in the jungle of New Guinea with a tribe that never met Western people before, to study eyebrows and facial expressions. He knows what he's talking about. link
