If whey makes your throat close up and affects your breathing, you may be slightly allergic to dairy and or lactose intolerant. In terms of protein shakes in general, they are meant as a supplement, not a necessity. Natural occurring solid foods are better for you overall. Not that protein supplements are bad, you just don't want to have to much of them. Judging from your question, it sounds like your on a regimented diet. Something you may want to consider is that going above one gram of protein per pound a day is more than needed, especially for a girl. That is, if your trying to hit a certain amount such as that.

Strictly speaking, do you consider protein powders paleo?
I make a shake out of egg whites (pasteurized from a carton), greek yogurt (plain) and berries. Strikes me as neolithic rather then paleolithic, tbh, but pretty natural at least. About 1/2C egg white 1/3c greek yogurt and a handful of berries.

The best protein powders are either whey or casein (each functions differently). I like optimum cause it has a nice amount of isolate in it.
