Have you ever gained weight because of a medication?

I went to the doctor last week (haven't been in years beforehand because I didn't have insurance), and noticed that I have gained over 30 lbs in the last 6 months. Using a trusted calorie calculator my former nutritionist linked me to, there's no way that I consume a calorie surplus to gain weight, so I was at a loss as to why I was gaining weight.

She asked me what medications I've been taking. I'm an allergy sufferer so I've been taking Zyrtec during the warm season since Claritin wasn't being effective anymore.

She said that antihistamines that cause drowsiness like Benadryl and Zyrtec have been known to cause weight gain!

So she prescribed me Flonase (now I have insurance so I can get it!) to take with Claritin and told me she if it wasn't working that she can write me Allegra and that it doesn't cause weight gain.

I have family members who are on all sorts of medication and their weight does "balloon" and they have problems in controlling this, plus--the cravings for certain foods. Someone is always dieting, it seems, because this is all I ever hear.

As discouraging as that may be, with some medications that cause weight gain, you probably will end up having to watch your weight, and always be conscientious of everything you consume.

Don't feel bad, sweetie. I am very thin, but I still have to work very hard to exercise and watch my intake as well, in order to maintain what I want to look like. I have fallen off the "skim milk wagon" several times in the past, but once back on, it's onward bound once more. Like with your medications, you just need to make it part of daily living.:))xx

I haven't had to take medication and never will. I think pharmaceutical companies make patients instead of curing them. I strongly suggest you find other alternatives to treat your allergies because medicine is corrupt now. Find natural alternatives. Of course natural alternatives won't cure all ailments but a natural and holistic lifestyle reduces the chances of ailments to near zero. And if you don't think the medication isn't bad for you you've gained thirty pounds from them. Down below are two links that have natural remedies.

Over the years I have been prescribed various drugs for depression and some of them caused weight gain. Some of the worst ones would cause a 10lb a month gain.

Suffering from depression and then gaining weight from what is supposed to help you. Really is counter productive.

The anti-depressants are also used to help with other problems as well.

If you are gaining weight you ARE running a caloric surprlus. Period.

However you may not be eating that many calories for someone your size. Its that the medication is impacting your hormone levels so your caloric needs are lowered.

No. The only medication I've been on was once for a bad cough because my lungs were so full of liquid. They gave me a week's worth of stuff and it just zapped my appetite and ability to sleep dead so I didn't eat for a week and stayed awake lol. It was awful.

My friend has asthma so she has an inhaler. We went to the gym every day for like 3 months. I toned and slimmed down immediately. She stayed the same and even gained weight. She was in tears about it. Then she looked at her inhaler and saw that it said, "Causes increase appetite and weight gain" and so that was the end of that for her.

Yes, 60 pounds from an antidepressant called Remeron that I was on for 5 years. It is so notorious for colossal weight gain that doctors prescribe it to patients who want to gain weight. I was constantly very hungry and if I delayed a meal I would shake, which my dr. attributed to the onset of a seizure. It was awful and I had to go on Weight Watchers to lose the weight.

People don't know it but a lot of these medications are causing much of the obesity epidemic.

I gained a lot on this anti-psychotic called Seroquel. Luckily I lost it all when I stopped taking it. Seriously though, I could eat for England. It was like having the munchies *blushes*.

Nope, I steer clear from meds I don't need. I haven't gained weight off the meds I ever have taken. If anything I lost the weight.
