Elf on the Shelf was developed in 2004 by authors Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. The story tells of how Santa's scout elves arrive between Thanksgiving and Christmas eve watch over kids so that Santa can make sure of who is indeed naughty or nice. According to the story, each night the elves fly home to Santa to make their report and then fly back to hide in a new spot each morning to play hide and seek with the family. Kids are not supposed to touch the elf or it will apparently lose it's magic.

Okay, so that's the official tag line, but somewhere along the lines of this super sugar coated way for parents to lie to their kids to get them to fall in line and be good...for a month...for presents...some adults have of course altered the message and the meaning to one in which said elf or elves cause a ton of mischief and mayhem around the house as perhaps a way to say to kids, don't do what the elf does because that'll get you in trouble...it's all so confusing.

Either way, I prefer the adult version...for other adults that is...as a way to get creative with this not so traditional family tradition. It's just fun to think of really bad things for these silly elves to do or trouble they can cause or just plain hillarious bits for family members to hide and seek. Kind of like those nightmare movies where the dolls are really alive and doing bad things (okay Christmas may be getting a little dark right now, ha!) but it's just fun to see what the family comes up with each day.
There are some really creative examples.
