Wham! just Knocked Off Mariah Carey with #1 Christmas Song?

Every December since 2020, the Billboard Global 200 chart has had Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" as the #1 holiday song... until this year, 2025. Wham!'s "Last Christmas" (released in 1984) is now the #1 Holiday song.

What do you think about this?

FYI, Mariah's song (release in 1994) has been #1 on many charts for more than 20 years.

I think the video (or, rather, short film) played a big role in that.

In the 80s, a lot of music videos were actually shot on video - standard definition analog video, but usually higher quality than VHS - and so most videos from that era aren't available in any better quality than standard definition video, and many are degraded from their original quality.

Last Christmas was the rare video that was shot, edited, and mastered on 35mm film, and in a widescreen format, so they were able to rescan and restore a 4K copy of the film that looks fantastic today - better than many brand new videos. I think that has helped bring the song back to generations that weren't around for its original release and helped make it popular again.

AIWFC- I wrote a nice arrangement for playing on my organ, including harmonic pedal notes (not just the root chord notes) or a relatively simple tune, and I play it fairly well. But MC's version has all those "gargle notes" (0:37 to 0:56) and not just a simple portamento ( glide between two notes).

LC- Another nice, simple tune, with a syncopated/hesitation rhythm to add interest. But when I first heard it years ago, it took quite awhile to believe that they were actual MALES performing the song.

While I like both of the songs from a musical standpoint, I really don't give much of a hoot about who is leading the charts. Neither will ever touch "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby and many other Christmas standards.

I think It is between Wham and Taylor Swift as to who did last Christmas better. Frankly, I liked Wham's version.

OK I heard that Mariah Carey's song was bumped off of number 1, but I didn't know which song booted it until now. Yeah Wham!'s song is a good one also. And Mariah's wasn't going to be number 1 forever.

Actually silent night sold more than "all I want". I was surprised it carey's was so popular. I didn't like it as tunes nor words nor her style. The theme is so unrealistic. I expected 'last Christmas to pass it sooner with recent 'men are toxic' attitude so that song 'last' would be popular , sure enough it has beaten carey's
