When Albert Einstein stated "Marriage is but slavery made to appear civilized", I interpret his quote as marriage means loss of liberty because both parties have to sacrifice their individual liberties to make their 'marriage' work. As a result, I would lose everything I cherish to make 'marriage' work.

Compatibility is 100% important if both parties want to have increased chance of functional marriage.

Not going to lie this is pretty depressing but really close to reality... especially in light to legal and social climate in which we live.

Marriage is great, as long as both people in it are mature and decent. And Einstein is the last person from whom I'd ever take relationship advice. He was notoriously ill-tempered and misanthropic, which I understand, but that doesn't make him someone who should be held up as an exemplar of someone who could ever make a marriage work.

Bottom line is that you should only get married if you want to. No one is forcing anyone to do it. And by all means, go into it with eyes wide open. Certainly do that. But don't make any blanket statements about it based on a failed celebrity union.
