What should I wear to a beach wedding?

I’m considering if I marry the guy I’m seeing long distance, getting married on a beach, late in the afternoon, in spring, having a simple dinner reception. Is a blue tulle, lace long sleeved, floor length gown adequate? The skirt is only a little bit puffy. The dress fits perfectly and looks great, but it’s not traditional. If so, what should I wear underneath the dress in the way of shoes? I’ve got two years to decide if I want to proceed, as does he and I’m meeting him this summer, in person, to see if we’re right for each other, after 5 years of consistent talking and close friendship.
