Why would my ex text me on new year's eve?

we Haven't really talked for a long time , and he lives in another country , still he remembered me and texted me ''hey how are you and happy new year '' at 12 am. I was so happy that I knew at least he didn't forget what we had earlier that year :) , what do you think ?

2 of my exs texted me this NYE, that is because we remain friends, like I am with all my exs, however, we are not really that close anymore, but yeah, friends, and that is the thing, no better chance to confirm a still existing friendship with an ex than in special times of the year, because no mather how smooth the break up, often or randomly be like "hey how you doing?" is AKWARD for an ex, and more if it is fresh, but if you CARE about that person, no better way to show it than on Christmas, or in her birthday, I do it, because I CARE, and I really do not do anything else, just a couple of texts on important days, what you would do for a FRIEND that is not nearby but you deeply care for.
