Authority, especially if they dont have riches already. Being rich is not actually inherently corruptive, its just that its related to some other problematic things. For example it can shield you from relating to other people since you do not encounter the same difficulties that they do so you share different concerns. While its not an actual quote its not necessarily incorrect either hence: "Let them eat cake!".
Other things that people think wealth corrupts you with is for example greed which is not really true. People dont become greedy when they are rich, its the greedy that have a chance to become rich in the first place. For all of these reasons and more its not the money that is the problem.
Authority on the other hand.. well.. the temptation to misuse it will always be there and even if you yourself have no reason to misuse your power there is a never-ending line of people who will ask you to misuse your authority for them in return for something or even as a result of threats. Either way its a test of character to not fall victim to misusing your authority for your own benefit.

Nasty cruel souls will exploit and wreak havoc in any situation especially when given the chance.
I do think though in some instances people making it to the top they're the kind of people that don't really have a conscience.

power is the only thing to truly expose people. all humans are bad when they get power... but power doesn't change anyone. it just lets them be what they already were
