I feel like that's the time you can feel motivated to do things on your own withouth being dependent on your parents.
But at the same time, 18 is still a very young age, sometimes I feel left out because my peers act so grown, they say things like how they're going to get piercings, tattoos, won't ask their parents consent for anything, they can do anything they want etc.
I don't get as much freedom as them because of the culture of my parents and my household. So I envy how they feel... but still, I'm still very young and I know I need guidance.
I hear lots of elders say how they felt so "grown" at 18 when they were not... and I'm like... if you don't start feeling grown at 18 then when will you? I feel like we all need that push at some point that motivates us to start thinking and maturing. The only issue is that most 18 years olds are too prideful and forget they still need guidance, so sometimes they make mistakes that end up ruining their future.
When it comes to adulthood I believe it doesn't have much to do with age but with maturity. So you can be younger than 18 and act like an adult and unfortunately that's usually a result of trauma where children have to act mature.
I feel like people put so much pressure in being 18... what do you think?
I barely remember being 18. It was most of my senior year in high school and part of my first college semester, so it basically was just another year.
I think it would be better to take time to work before going to college and get some "real world" perspective outside of the education system bubble, which is almost entirely obsolete BS or unfactual idealism. In hindsight, my outlook on college and really everything would've evolved very differently if I hadn't been working while in high school.
over 100 years ago when I was 18, we wothe right to vote, and in our state we could drink. we thought we knew everything and were bulletproof. Had a menialjob that paid ok, were learning how to use our freedoms, were starting to get a life of our own and were worried about the draft. Of all of my friends no one had a number lower than 130, so most of them join up and went in one of the services. If you joined you could pick where you went, if you rolled the dice you pretty much knew where you were headed. It seemed to be a much simpler times, going out on the weekend, if we were broke we would just get a case of cheap beer and go hang out in someones barn and talk about life. I went to tech school, was making a good living, got my first new car, had a motorcycle, life was good. Don't be in too much of a hurry to grow up, it will happen all too quickly, and you will be looking back on your memories someday.
18 is only a number, the question is, do you feel adult, when I was 18 I felt adult but then there were things that I think I wasn't, how I understand it, the age of being an adult came about because so many young men could fight for their country but couldn't vote for it, but take sex, I think I was an adult before I reached even the age of consent, but in money matters, at the age of 50, I'm a juvenile,
My father died a month before my 18th birthday so I was forced to grow up fast. I'm turning 23 this year and I'm only starting to really experience life now, I never really had the options to hang out with friends or party or anything like that, it was always just do what I can to help ends meet and when I couldnt find work I'd be taking care of the house and my mother.
It's a real bitch these days to go through the process of maturity. It takes longer for people to achieve stability and independence in this decade because of minimum lvl of education you need to secure a decent job. Be very careful about what you choose to study. Make sure it leads directly to an employment opportunity. I wasted a lot of time when I was younger. Most of my friends have accomplished way more than I have. Although it's never too late to get back on track. Believe in yourself. Save money. Travel. Figure out where you want to live. Try not to be too pessimistic when you fuck up. Take it as learning experience. Keep moving forward.
18 ainât nothing, everyone still thinks your a kid. Wait till your 21 thatâs when life really starts & people actually start treating you with more respect & not trying to finesse you for something cause youâre young
Honestly my advice for 18,19,20 DO YOUR SCHOOL, donât pick people, boys, jobs over school. GET IT DONE, get it over with by 21, youâll love life more if you did that. Good luck baby girl
18 is the opportunity to finally prove yourself. If everyone has been saying "you're not an adult yet," well... now you are. You can make them all look like idiots by going out and killing it in life. Get your job, get your own place, dress well and walk with confidence, join civic associations, volunteer, attend city council meetings, mentor younger teens. Do all of these things and do them well. And then give the haters your middle finger.
It's easy to feel grown at 18 because you're now officially an adult. BUT, the feeling will be concentrated and solidified when; your living on your own, working, paying your own rent, bills, entertainment, food, clothing, building a nest-egg and not relying on parents or anyone else for dime one.
If I could go back I would have been more serious about college in the very beginning and not worry so much about the boyfriend I had. It took me longer to get my degree because it took me longer to grow up.
At 18 I was a mess. I was too interested in the party and not the future. My advice to you is to have fun, but remember that you are building the rest of your life and that is going to last a much longer time.
Trust me I do count my blessings, what's happening in the US is sad, but just because kids leave under your roof doesn't mean you should make them feel like they're in prison, in both cases seems like parents looking at their child as a property.
Being 18 means you can also decide to continue acting and respecting and doing everything you did last year, when you were 17. You do Not have to change, just "because"
It is a great age. You are old enough to be an adult and have some responsibility but still young enough to still have fresh eyes on the world around you.
Besides being charged as an adult, nothing much really changes, only that your parents can't legally boss you around anymore but if you got nowhere to live then they still lowkey do 😂
18 was a traumatic year for me since I was sexually assaulted. I didnât do much but avoid everyone at that time. But for a normal experience 18 should be fun.
Being was one of best times in my life. I could never forget what an older man in my neighborhood said to me. He said, You change girls like I change my underwear 😏
