The correct answer is Lake Erie, one of the 5 Great Lakes in North America, bordered by the US and Canada.

HOMES is a way to remember the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior
Lake Ontario is the smallest
Lake Erie often freezes (at least near shore), and there are stories of fishermen getting stuck on the ice in the Spring, when it starts to thaw
