With what country does France have the longest border?

Those of you who said "Spain" ... that's a good guess, but it's not correct.

The correct answer is "Brazil". The border between French Guiana (which is part of France as an overseas department) and Brazil is 730km (453mi) while the France-Spain border is 656km (408mi).

It's difficult to remember that all of France's overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion) are all part of France.

Ok, so without consulting a map (no cheating!), my first guess would just be Spain. Straight line, and I know on the eastern border there are all those countries like Italy and Germany, Belgium, I think The Netherlands as well, and Switzerland?

If it’s an “interesting answer”, it’s probably not obvious, so I’m wondering if it’s one of those little tiny countries I forget about like Monaco or Luxembourg, and they’re just surrounded by France on all sides and it adds up to significant border mileage.

Brazil. French Guiana is a proper part of France, just like Alaska is to the US. Many people don't know that.

I will say Spain. My niece lives up north there and I was lucky she once took me and my girls to a coastal French town (St Jean de Luz). She is in the Basque region of Spain. Other then Spain other smaller countries border it, but I think the boundary between France and France is greater.

By the way Tom, I know you'll disagree with me--but a border is a physical barrier! So it you had French Guiana in mind, that is located in SO America---that's not correct. I think that's why most people said Spain here.

My guess is New Zealand. This is because there is a long maritime border between French Polynesia and the Cook Islands of New Zealand. Kiribati would be second for FP and then the border with the Pitcairn Islands of the UK.

I beg to differ. There are explicit treaties regarding maritime borders.

I want to say Germany, but possibly Italy because Sardina and Elba match up along the Mediterranean without a gap of international waters in between there all the way to Sicily. So that extends the border out pretty far.
