What was your initial reaction on the news when Marvin Gaye was killed 40 years ago now on April 1, 1984?

Yesterday has been 40 years since music legend Marvin Gaye’s passing.

Apr 1, 1984: 40 years ago, Marvin Gaye was shot & killed at age 44 during an argument with his father. On this date 40 years ago, we lost the legendary R&B icon Marvin Gaye. Many thought the tragic news was an April Fools joke but sadly, it wasn't. He was shot and killed by his father Marvin Gaye Sr.

He was also born on April 2, 1939, today is his birthday he would’ve been 85 years old today if he was still alive. Which makes it so sad of how intertwined it is that he got killed the day before his birthday.

For those who was around back then, Where were you when this happened and reaction on the day you found out the news Marvin died?

I knew he was dead, but I don't remember it happening. Being 40 years ago is kind of a surprise though. That's the kind of thing that makes ya feel old. Sometimes things feel like they happened just recently, then I realize it was ten years ago.

I have a greatest hits CD for him. So I just put it on.

I don't remember his passing, so it doesn't feel like anything. But it does surprise me it's been that long.

I remember very well when John Lennon got killed. That was 43+ years ago.

So many of the musicians I grew up with are gone.

5 years before I was born, but that was a sad lost for music. Back in the days when you actually had to have some talent to have a singing career.

Was that the time that his cross dressing father who was also a pastor shot him for “disrespecting” him, in a house that Marvin paid for and let his family live there rent free?

Yes it was but from what I remembered what happened was his dad and mom got into it at that house where I think was getting physical with the dad putting his hands on Marvin’s mom so Marvin intervened and pulled the dad off his dad and think they were fighting so Marvin’s dad grabbed a gun that Marvin gifted to him and shot him with it. They call it self defense but that’s BS

Loved his singing. My life was in such turmoil I didn't here about it till much later. Like a year or so. Oddly enough my problems were with my dad.
