This is a common humor that I've never understood, what's so funny about someone tripping, slipping, or falling in some other way?
When we were all walking back to class after lunch in 6th grade, I was too close to the slot where steel double doors close, and I accidentally kicked it and fell to my knees. People laughed at me, but I just looked at them, confused, as to why they thought it was funny.
In 2019, at an airsoft place, I accidentally kicked someone's hard rifle case, and fell down. I held my hand out, asking for someone's help, not one person giggled, and two people helped raise me to my feet.
It was a heartwarming display, but it also still begs the question, why would anyone find it funny to see someone slip, trip, or fall in some other way?
I asked a question about public embarrassments, and one person told me they were embarrassed when they slipped on a wet floor, and someone laughed at him, before helping him up. I don't get it, why would it be funny for a person to fall to the ground?
As kids, short and light as we were, falling to the ground is unlikely to have dire consequences, but as adults, falling to the ground and hitting the wrong place can lead to serious injury. Why anyone would laugh at that beats me.
So tell me, why would someone find it funny to see someone slip and fall to the ground?
Cuz it's unexpected. Like "look both ways b4 u cross the street and then get hit by an airplane." It would be horrible for a person to die, but it's also kinda funny way to die yknow? I wouldn't laugh if someone fell down tho unless we're friends so they know I care if they got hurt even if i laugh too. It's not funny that someone gets hurt or embarrassed, but the surprise of the situation is funny, at least that's what I think. (I obviously wouldn't laugh if someone actually died by getting hit by an airplane while crossing a street.)
No that's, yes i wouldn't laugh either. It's not funny. But if an airplane hits someone who DID look both ways, that's also not funny that they died and I wouldn't laugh, but it's unexpected. The unexpectedness is funny.
I remember doing an assignment on humour in secondary school , and lets not forget this was long ago , because sadly I'm old , the hypostasis that I came up with was that most humour at the time was laughing at peoples misfortune , so it would be a take on falling , on language , on disadvantage ( Paul Hogan had a homeless , drunken character ) , men by misfortune being kicked in the balls ( trip on a rake , etc ) ..
Now , on watching a TV show the other day , I'm not sure that much has changed and people falling comes under this category. Think back to the likes of Benny Hill , Paul Hogan , even Norman Gunstan , where you laughed at the misfortune of the character.
Its not really that funny , when you think about it.
it's possible if it is one of your friends and they weren't hurt. A vast number of our calls are for lift assists, where people have fallen and either gotten hurt, or their spouse cannot get them up. For those people it is a very big issue. We transport maybe half of them. I had a fall on scene, and this is why it's good to have friends, he said for $20 he didn't see anything, until he figured out that I was hurt. Turns out all of me landed on my right elbow my arm was bent up, and I ended up tearing my rotator cuff in 3 places. That was on the 4th of July, I had surgery the end of July and could return to active duty, no restrictions right before Christmas.
Because some people have been watching the "Jackass" movies. But to be honest, I tend to chuckle when Biden falls on his face. He does it so very well. I think Jackass found its newest star. 😂
Falling it's not funny itself. Those who laugh at people who fall, might think it looks ridiculous or incredible when someone falls. Maybe they don't mean to laugh but it's a reaction. However, those who laugh with intent, are insensitive folks in my eyes.
I'm not going to laugh if someone gets really hurt, but if they're doing something stupid and win the stupid prize then I'm definitely laughing. If someone's trying to show off or goof around and eats sht then that's even funnier😂
Slippery floors are my favourite. I just love how sudden and unsuspecting the fall is, cracks me up every time. In fact I even laugh at myself when it happens to me!
I have no idea why people find it funny. I don't. I had an experience of slipping and falling in mud in high school, so I know how it feels to be utterly embarrassed by tripping and falling so why would I ever want to laugh at someone when I've been through that embsrassment?
Hi Rangers.. It was me that fell in your story up there, and whilst nobody wants to see anyone hurt, I do get it. Falling over CAN be funny. People like Buster Keaton in the 20/30's I believe, made a career out of it!
When I was a freshman in HS my rather portly Math teacher leaned back in his chair during a quiz and it snapped; I heard the noise, looked up and saw two legs up in the air behind the desk. He got up red-faced, embarrassed but apparently not hurt and the class just cracked up.
At our class reunion a couple girls I knew from that class brought it up.
Depends who it happens to this happened to, this is the Scottish 'First Minister' Humza Yousaf pity he didn't break his neck it would have saved Scotland a lot of grief.
Some people do it on purpose to get a lawsuit on the company. I've seen it happen this lady spill water later shebpretended she fell and wanted to sue the company thankfully we have camaras the footage captured this lady spilling water.
I had been reading a 'theory' a while back that stated that ''funny'' is related to mishaps of others. No one laughs about charming or friendly stuff... which causes smiles and such - but not laughter.
If the person looks like they actually got hurt then I help them up and ask if they're okay. But sometimes people fall and they don't get hurt, and the way they fell was kind of funny.
It is funny if they deserve it. It isn't funny if they're in my way and their fall is hindering me. If they're going to fall on their face or fall off a cliff or whatever, I'd rather they do it somewhere out of my way.
