Should I tell my boyfriend's best friend who is a licensed therapist that he has a card game addiction?

This is bad... so his friend is a listened therapist. i just had a baby and now my boyfriend has spiraled himself into a gambling addiction. Its a card game (magic the gathering, doing play it...) don't know how I don't know and it got bad fast... like in 7 months it has escalated to the point of needing an intervention.

I don't know whats wrong with him... this is our first baby. He also gets very mad and I'm assuming wouldn't react well considering there's addiction involved. Its taking over his life to the point to where he's spending large amounts of time and money, neglecting me and the baby.

He played one night from 7pm to 7am and he had to work. He ended up missing his shift and waking up an hour later. That tells me it's more important than his job. He won't spend any money on the baby but i see him checking the mail daily and opening boxes of cards. Oh and to add detail he works with people who have addictions at his job... the irony is real.

MTG isn't a gambling game, is a collectable trading card game in which people battle eachother.

It is very expensive though, so if his income is low he needs to prioritize other things.
Sometimes people will try to get rich quick selling MTG cards, but the only way to get rich with MTG reliably is to play professionally and win the pro tournament. And to do that you are better off buying the 90 individual cards you need for your specific deck idea, not boxes or packs with a bunch of random cards in it.

However, if you buy sets when they come out, and save them unopened, years later they can buy you a house by selling them online, so they are an investment, just not a practical one.

If he's not willing to spend any money on things for the baby that is another problem entirely. You both have to chip in 50/50 for that.

Also, when playing professionally, you are restricted to only more recent cards (I think the last 4 sets to have releases iirc?

And there is a banned and restricted list, in which certain cards from those sets are banned in play or you can only have 1 to 3 of them instead of the usual 4, so this further limits purchasing options.

I don't think a therapist is a good idea, this is donething you teo have to work out yourselves, if you need a third party to do that, then the marriage is doomed.

It is gambling. First i should be clear I introduced HIM into the world magic the gathering. I played hardcore so i know. He bus mystery packs and opens them all day watches videos of others opening the cards. he's addicted. you're putting money into a mystery pack and he hunts for the most expensive and rare cards. You're paying money to get a big payout. Gambling. And he does make bets.

I don't know honestly. I agree with you that your description of what he is doing is bad, but just because his friend is a therapist doesn't mean he's HIS therapist. An intervention on his behalf could cause a rift in their friendship. I agree your boyfriend needs counseling but I would find a therapist that isn't close to either of you to help him with his addiction.
