We might understand it but we've hardly ever really learned any lessons from just knowing things. Of course. This is because human nature is like breathing. If you put humans in a situation similar to one from the past, human nature will cause them to do the same thing.

That statement is usually an abstraction levelled at collectives. On an individual person basis, "remember the past" usually means things on the level of "don't leave the oven on when you step outside".
