What does it mean if a guy holds you by the waist?

So the other night at the club I was working at, a friend was there with his group of friends. Naturally I went over to say hi and ended up hanging out with them because we all knew each other. Throughout the night, my friend had his arm around my waist almost the entire time. Be it that he was trying to protect me from the crowd or when we were walking. Thing is, I don't know him well but this seems to be the second time this has happened. I've never rejected him and his actions. In fact I actually enjoy his company. We spoke the day after really casually too.

I want to know if he has any interest in me or it was just because we were at a club.

It can be a habbit but it is kinda obvious that he tries to show his friends that you are together and that you are nobody elses but his. It might be a sense of ownership, love or just him being interested in you, blabbering about you to his friends and then being pressured into a relationship with you. This might also be a way in which he tries to show you tbat he likes you.
