Look, if his 'overprotectiveness' is leaning towards being overbearing and dominant, then I suggest you take a step back and take stock if you are not romantically interested in him. It sets an unsavory precedent and might lead to deterioration of your friendship.
Sure it's great that you have a guy friend who looks out for you and makes sure you are okay. It's all good as long as he is not being an ass about it. But if you are romantically interested in this guy and he does these things for your comfort, I think you should make a move to show that you are interested and care about him in return. All the best!

He is just being over protective like you are his little sis
If I did this, it would mean I like the girl. I wouldn't want any other guys to flirt or even talk (selfish, I know) if I were attracted to her since I get jealous easily.
Same with the name. I tend to say a girl's name more if I'm attracted to them.
If he's like what me (and what I'm assuming most other guys are like), then he probably likes you and is trying to keep others away from you to give him a higher chance of you noticing.

It means he likes you in some way. Either as a friend he wants to protect or someone kinda sister-ish or someone he wants a romantic relationship with.
