It mostly comes down to attitude and your will to make it work. Here are some points that my boyfriend does that I've noticed are important me.
Tell your partner you miss them
You might think the other one knows it but it's still so much better to actually hear that from your loved one. It tells you that even when you guys are apart your bf/gf isn't just living their own life but actually wishes you were there to be a part of it.
Joke around
No you can't play wrestle or tickle each other when apart but you can still have the humor in the relationship. Send funny pictures of each other or just memes saying "this is so you". Laughter and fun is the base of any relationship.
(Latest one I send to him.. Yeaah don't even ask :D)
When you party with your friends don't forget about your other half
Your partner already feels a little left out and sad they're not the one who gets to spend the most time with you. When you go out or to a party you're allowed to have fun but if you can just text her or him every once in a while and kinda include them to the party I promise it will make them feel like they are important and that even when you're having fun with your friends they're the one who's always on your mind.
Talk!!!
Discuss the possible concerns you might have. Also make plans for the future. There's nothing worse than the uncertainty of a relationship important than you. If you guys are on the same page not even the distance can ruin what you have.
Ignore negative people
Trust me you're gonna hear a lot of "that can't work" "couldn't you find anyone closer?" my answer? I could've found someone closer by but I didn't want to because he's the one I love. It makes me sad how the expectation is that pretty much any guy will do and you can change boyfriends like socks. Why?? I don't wanna settle for just having a boyfriend that is not important to me. What is important is to have my person and he is my person. Forever and ever if I have a say!
