Honestly, if he needs to talk to her and if she acts up he needs to do the same and if she gets violent he needs to slap some sense into her and make her say 'sorry'. not hard to do so or just talk to a cop or a lawyer.

For real though if a woman came at me with a baseball bat or something she's getting floored. Best advice for your buddy is tell him to walk away as fast as he can.
Coming at a person with a baseball bat is a bit different to normal violence :)
I've given the same advice to women I've known who had violent partners. It doesn't always work. They usually end up going back to the guy because they're self confidence has been ruined due to the situation. Reckon your friend would probably be the same. maybe tell him to seek counselling after?
The intent is to work it out for they love each other and kids are involved. your suggestion of counselling is very apt. The point you overlook is the older generation are very private as a rule. As with the case here, both would never air dirty washing
