Bump into ex, he hugs and kisses me?

I broke up with my ex almost a year ago. A few days ago, I bumped into him on the street, out of no where. I was a bit shocked to see him, from out of nowhere, as I wasn't expecting to see him at all. I saw him, and looked at him for a split second wondering if it was actually him, as I was so surprised. He said my name, came over to me took my hand and while shaking it, he pulled me in, and he hugged and kissed me on my cheek. It was so unexpected and happened so fast. He asked how I was, and I was a bit upset at the time, and didn't say much, so he walked on, and so did I. He was awkward having bumped into me though. Could I get an opinion rom some guys in particular about his actions, did he seem happy to see me? Why go and hug and kiss me when we broke up almost a year ago? What was he thinking?
