Why does my boyfriend always insist on buying me things?

My boyfriend and I go on dates and go to out to eat, and on dates I'll let him pay for my movie ticket or lunch. I understand that he wants to take on the responsibility of being "the guy," but he goes onto wanting to buy me things like a new video game or some cute figures, things that I plan on buying myself.
He's my third boyfriend (and I'm his first girlfriend), and he's the only one who insists on buying me unnecessary things. I like that he shows that he cares, but I also feel like I look like I'm using him for things or that he thinks the only reason I'm with him is for him to buy me stuff.

Maybe he just likes giving you gifts because he likes seeing you smile from them. You're right though, maybe he also has a misguided idea that more gifts = more loving. You can tell him gently that you don't need all that from him
