Why does my guy friend treat me like a child?

I'm friends with this guy who is 11 years older than me. We have been friends for a year. He isn't romantically interested in me because he rejected me when I asked him what our relationship was. One of the things I've noticed is he tends to be very over-protective of me. When it starts to get a little dark outside, sometimes he will walk me home so I feel safe. At the end of the night he always walks me to my bus first before he gets on his. If I get freaked out by walking out at night " It's OK, because your with me", and he'll make it seem like when I'm with him, I wouldn't get hurt or get hit by a car because he would either push me out of the way before I get hit, or stop me from going in front of a moving car if I was out of it, or something by putting his arm out in front of me as a barrier between me and the car. Then, he'll make sure not to bring me anywhere with people he knows I would feel uncomfortable around. For instance, there was a drunk couple stood near me and he told me to stand near him. 

One time he grilled me about my abusive ex-boyfriend for two hours and kept asking intimate questions about our relationship. He kept asking me 'do you still text him?' And 'was there anybody else you've been with
I was walking up a steep hill the other day with my guy friend and he told me to wait whilst he checks how steep the hill was before we both walked up
then on the way down he said 'let me go first in case you fall down'

Why does he treat me like a child?

Walking a female friend home or to the bus at night is sadly prudent. Not for the reason of throwing himself in front of a car for you which is a beyond bizarre conversation but because of the risk of sexual assault etc.

I cannot get over the hill thing.
