Seems to me that he is now showing his true self. It is typical for both members of any romantic relationship to display their best behavior in front of their partner, at east for the first few months. The "romantic high" is estimated to last for around only 3 months I believe, and after that, it's more so a conscious decision to keep a relationship going more than an emotional one (this is why most relationships fall apart after 3 months).
Now that 6 months have passed, it seems to me that he is done showing his best behavior and has resorted to what he would normally do. I don't know how much money he makes and how much his rents cost, so I won't make any assumptions that he might be bluffing, but it is clear that he is letting you know that you are not his top priority, unintentionally or not. Also seems sort of weird that he would let you pay... I would have been too ashamed to do that. Perhaps he's just an ardent supporter of gender equality. I would hope that he is genuinely thanking you at the very least.
Anyways, if you don't like it, perhaps talk to him about it. Tell him it would be appreciated if he would save for his girlfriend as he saves for his rent. If he makes excuses again, either he is bluffing, or he is showing you that it's more than just house rent that is above you in his priority list. If that upsets you, I don't think staying in the relationship would be too healthy for you, both emotionally and financially.

If your worried about this I'm not seeing much hope for your relationship. If you can't equally support each other then this isn't going to work the way you want it to. Based on how you worded this I would say you are being selfish and he is trying to grow as a man.
You can pay for your own dinners for a bit? I kinda feel like you know the answer and that's why you felt the need to use anon

Stop going out to dinner together. Six months to save for an apparent mean he cannot afford the apartment either.
Ideally people should split it.
