Guys, what are your thoughts on your girlfriend avoiding family events with you?

I've been dating my boyfriend for almost two years now. I met his parent about 5 months into us dating and everything was fine. My boyfriend doesn't have a close relationship with his parents so he visits rarely, only for an event. I tend to get invites to theses events but I just dread going to them. I am always very awkward and have nothing to add to a conversation. They drink and smoke I don't like being around in that environment. They are also very rude to my boyfriend and he feels uncomfortable as well. He just shows up because he feels obligated to. Is it wrong for me to just overall avoid going to the events?

Not necessarily wrong, but if he wants you go, you're doing it for him so discuss it with him. If he doesn't care, don't feel obligated. The other thing you could do with him is beg out early. Go for a few hours and get the hell out. Probably the best thing would be to convince him that it's a waste of his time. Why be around people who treat you like shit just because they're family? He doesn't "need" to go either.

If he only goes because he feels obligated, there should be no expectation of you putting in an appearance. If you don't want to go, just say so to your boyfriend.

Chances are that his reply will be, "I don't blame you."
