Would it be weird to tell him I love him even though we are not a couple?

Him and I started as a fling, but for various reasons (mostly him not wanting kids) we ended that and we remained friends. There was a little bit of drama during break up but over the time we became very close friends (a year now). I realized that I love him. I'm not in love with him and I don't hope or expect anything to change, but I love him and I have a need to tell him. Mostly because he doesn't think anyone loves him, he has low opinion of himself, and I want him to know that's not true and that I love him. He has done so much for me, things my own family wouldn't help me with, he is there for me in every sense and I adore his deep soul and sharp mind. I think he is legit my soulmate.

As long as you're not trying to manipulate the other person, you should be able to express that without a problem.

My absolute best friend in the world is an ex in a similar way to yours and saying I love you is just a spontaneous part of ending our conversations.

Be careful about the soulmate designation--I'm not a huge fan of putting labels like that on relationships--but the sensation of love that is there in those words when they are sincerely meant is one of the best gifts that life has to offer.
