Boyfriend seemed surprised I brought up his usage of his phone?

Firstly a li'l backstory. I don't see my boyfriend very often and sometimes it's just for a couple of hours. We're both adults and have busy lives. When we actually see each other face to face, I want to spend some quality time together. When we first started dating, both our usage of our phones was way less than it is now. Of course that means we're more comfortable with each other. I might be a bit old fashioned myself (I don't know) and I don't use social media a lot but my boyfriend does.

I brought it up in conversation if he could set his phone aside a little when he spends time with me and he seemed surprised. I don't know if it was because nobody had brought it up before or if it's just something he doesn't even notice that he does. I also check my phone now and then but I try to not do it too often when I'm spending time with someone. I want to give them all of my attention. In my opinion it's a bit rude to focus on your phone more than on the person sitting next to you.

Boyfriend took it well but I don't know if he understood. We don't share the same opinions about social media etc. So looking for opinions/experiences about this. Have you experienced something similar? Suggestions if he didn't understand what I meant?
Also where is the line between using phones a lot and actual phone addiction?
