im living with a man in an open relationship (one sided... he sleeps around and I am expected to be loyal) and has been like that from the start. He has not lied or made his intentions for being strictly non-monogamous hidden from the start. We are fine there...

When I hear or see that he will say/do the same compliments and gestures to strangers/new ladies as he does to me I feel disrespected, unappreciated, and disposable.

Why do men do this? Is this something I have overlooked when it comes to non-monogamous partnership? Does my subservient lifestyle choice come attached to a lack of importance in his (mens) mind or is this just him specifically abusing my effort towards him?

You are conflating a Dom/sub relationship and a committed vs. casual relationship.

The vast majority of women really aren't capable of having casual relationships - women aren't biologically programmed for that, and even when they get into the relationship thinking they are just going to be casual, their biology betrays them and they develop feelings. Even if you don't want a committed relationship with him per se, you can't help but want the emotional privileges of a commited relationship - that's why it hurts when you hear him compliment other women.

The problem is that you weren't honest with yourself about that, and so you couldn't be honest with him either, and that's how you got where you are today.

What you need to do is figure out - being brutally honest with yourself - what you can and can't be comfortable with - and not just now but long term - and once you can articulate those limits and boundaries, you need to sit down with your Dom and admit that you didn't understand what your boundaries and limits really were, but you have been having feelings about it and you now realize that you have to make some changes. Acknowledge that he hasn't done anything wrong, but that, if things between you are going to continue, a few things need to be changed. Explain your boundaries and how you arrived at them, and see if you can work out a new arrangement that is acceptable to both of you. If you can't, then nicely and politely end the relationship and move on.

And if you do move on, then make sure you set your boundaries up front with the next guy.

Most comments have insinuated that I am miserable in my relationship or that his sexlife outside of our dynamic upsets me. Neither is true. I completely understand where you are coming from, and in my opinion, he *could* make some adjustments so that this is no longer a problem (or, at least, MUCH less of a problem). Whether or not he's WILLING to do that is another matter - but there's a very real possibility that he has no idea that these things bother you. Men are not always great with "social intelligence" even if they are very smart and wise in many other ways, so you shouldn't assume that if a man does something that you don't like, that he's doing it on purpose, or that he's doing it knowing it will hurt you. Often, that's not the case. But if you TELL HIM, THEN you give him an opportunity to do better. Maybe he won't, and then you can cross that bridge, but maybe he can adjust and then everything would be great.

Communication is EVERYTHING in a relationship, and that goes TRIPLE when you are in an "advanced" kind of relationship (kinky and polyamorous), so think it through, and then have the conversation. Whether it goes great or bad, you'll still feel better having said your peace.

Are there exceptions? Yes. But most of those exceptions were either survivors of abuse and don't have healthy instincts (which isn't their fault, but something they have to learn to manage), OR they've already had so many partners that they've burned out their ability to pair bond, so they no longer get attached to anyone, even when they want to. This is probably only 10-15% of women, though (it may be quite a bit higher than that in certain circles, but I'm talking about the population overall).

If you surveyed 1000 random women, and asked them if they struggle when trying to have casual relationships because they develop feelings, I think we all know that 800-900 of those women would agree that it's a problem for them.

It comes down to honoring your relationship and wellbeing of your partner. Some give and take is required and you have demonstrated that to a broader extent than many could. In this case, he is not honoring you and needs to listen, learn, and change behavior. If your relationship is all "his way or the highway", then something is very wrong. Realize though that conflicts in needs occur and htis is one... your sense of security will be interfering with his ability to put "hooks into new chicks." Looks like a conflict of interests.
