The relationship could absolutely become healthier. Going from LDR to in person is a huge change. Many times there are things that work about a couple in one form that don't work in another form.

Long distance communication, for example the abuse of texting, can be the cause of so many misunderstandings...

There are many things going wrong with a long-distance relationship that can be solved with actually talking about things that matter then and being together for a couple of hours, in person. Things like boundaries, meanings, what you are and aren't comfortable with, how you see the relationship and your progress...

That said, if something reaches a really toxic phase it might have gone past the point of no return, since you can't communicate anymore. And if you can't communicate your relationship is going down like the Titanic after the iceberg it...
