Is it unrealistic for a conventionally unattractive person to seek out conventionally attractive partners?

Now I agree that everyone is attractive in some way to someone. But within every society there is a notion of conventional attractiveness. This may be controversial but it is generally understood in my culture that slim women with symmetrical faces are considered conventionally attractive, while taller, muscular men with angular, symmetrical faces are conventionally attractive. At least this much seems true in urban areas in the current time period.

Usually I see in my social circle that men who have all or some of the physical traits mentioned above tend to marry the slim girls with pretty faces. Would you consider it a waste of time for a person who is not conventionally attractive to try to court someone who is? I am speaking only about heterosexual relationships. Instead it would be more meaningful to seek out partners based on criterion other than looks, such as shared interests and financial stability.
