My boyfriend acts different in public ?

My boyfriend is loving and thoughtful. But when we’re in public he acts different. He gets nervous and he can be awkward.

We have this thing where when he drops me off somewhere he tells me” too da loo” and I respond, “I love you.” And he’ll say “I love you too” and I close the door.

But one time he was dropping me off at school and as I was coming out of the car, two girls passed behind me as he was saying our phrase. But instead of saying “I love you”. He just said “Too da loo”… I stood there waiting for him and he didn’t say it and seemed a bit nervous. I got upset and confronted him, he said it was his insecurities that made him feel like he’s being judged.

Now yesterday, he was dropping me off at school again, and a girl was passing by when he was saying our phrase. But THIS TIME, he lowered his voice and said “ I love you” . I asked him why he lowered his voice when he said I love you to me… He said he doesn’t know why and then loudly said “Good luck on your exam!” I told him it was too late.

I don't know what to feel about all this! He grew up being bullied and judged for his weight and he has his insecurities because of that but idk…

Do you think there’s anything wrong with what he’s done? Could he embarrassed to be with me? Or doesn’t want girls to see he’s with me? That’s how I feel!
