Does your partner always blame you?

My wife almost always blames me, then usually realizes it's not my fault. I've learned to just put up with it, repeatedly declaring my innocence gets tiring.

This afternoon, she opened the refrigerator, found liquid on one of the shelves, and immediately asked me what had I done. A few minutes later, she discovered a bottle, lying down, didn't have the cap on tight and was leaking. She didn't apologize, she rarely does, and just cleaned up the mess. She was the one that put the leaking bottle in the fridge.

In my situation the fellow hadn't hit "partner" status yet and was already gaslighting and blaming everything he did wrong on me... claiming he didn't remember doing anything to provoke me and I just simply was having dramatic flares. (FYI, to put it in context, looking at him and saying goodnight then walking away so as not to make a big stink in front of people is considered to him a "dramatic flare" but in actuality it was the most civilized thing that could have been done while he was cavorting and carrying on disrespectfully, which he "can't remember" bc he was drinking.)

Different folks gaslight for different reasons. Typically bc they have avoidant personalities, but also because they don't know how to handle criticism of any kind.

ROFL, if you're a guy involved with a human female, you know exactly how this question plays out. Women generally suck at accountability. It's their Kryptonite. They cannot admit they are wrong. They will never apologize. And a man is always "attacking them" or "gaslighting" them if he calls them out on their insecure behavior. Oh yeah, they all learn the defensive language and projection skills early on. It's basically like interacting with a large child who has an overdeveloped sense of entitlement and zero experience with the word "NO".

What you've explained is usually the case for me as well. My partners have usually been volatile and get angry at me, then take time to think over the scenario and replay it in their heads until they realize they were wrong to be angry. I can say (maybe arrogantly so) that I've been in the right the majority of the time in my relationships.

In my marriage, there are two reasons for me to get unfairly blamed. First, my wife is 62 and her memory is not as good as when she was younger. Second, because she is Chinese, she sometimes does not understand things I say to her but she is too proud to admit that truth. With my partner? Not always, but I've been blamed few times, but he realised after few hours that it wasn't my fault. So, he apologised. With my elderly family member? Yes, but I don't blame him. It gets exhausting but I remind myself to be patient.
