How common was it in past generations to punish boys for crying?

My older cousin once explained that when my uncle (who is now in his 60's) was saying goodbye to his mother and leaving to another country, he cried. However, his mother (my deceased grandma) slapped hard and told him to knock it off, that he's a man and how boys don't cry.

What? My husband and I have a 7 year-old son and we've never hit him, not less for showing emotions. He's allowed to express himself and cry if he's really sad. I can't image slapping my son for expressing sadness if he were to grow up, form his own family and leave to another country. I would be hugging him, cry with him and wishing him the best in life. How dare my grandma do that to her child? Men have feelings too.
