Easter: Beyond the Bunnies

Easter: Beyond the Bunnies

Easter is a really special moment of the year; spring is coming, everybody eats chocolate or real eggs, stores go kamikaze with pictures of the Easter bunny, everyone has those little pipe-cleaner chicks on their hats, cakes, flower arrangements, etc. Who could not like Easter? (Ok, some of those rabbit costumes are kind of scary). But, nonetheless, amidst all of this happiness, people often forget to be happy about one big important thing. The reason all of these things are.

Easter is the celebration of the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Now, I am sure the above statement has made a lot of non-Christians think, "Oh, no. Not that! (yawn)" or "They don't have enough scientific evidence to show that that even happened." or "I don't have time for Christian beliefs." Not so. Read on. Even if you are not a Christian, you can still enjoy and celebrate Easter with almost as much enthusiasm as us. Let me explain. In celebrating Christ and His resurrection, we celebrate topics that can be celebrated by all. Topics such as life, hope for life after death, hope in general, the power we have to change ourselves and our surroundings, comfort, being able to start again when we make a mistake, love, friendship, and other things. Most of the things I have just named are generally valued by most people of most faiths. (I include Atheism as a faith, they have faith that there is no faith)

A quick recap on the Easter story, using points to make for faster reading.

1. Jesus was a man whom Christians believe to be the son of God or God Himself, depending on their denomination.

2. Jesus performed many miracles and set an example for us on how we should live if we want to be happy.

3. Jesus loves us all.

4. Jesus instituted the Sacrament as a way for us to continually regain spiritual cleanliness.

5. Jesus suffered for all the sins, sorrow, pain, and sickness of every human being that has ever walked the earth and ever will walk the earth. The pain was so great that drops of blood came from every pore. This is called the Atonement. This sacrifice can be used to help us when we are suffering, and can be used like an eraser for our sins if we repent. Jesus already suffered the consequence on our behalf.

6. Jesus was betrayed and sentenced to death by people who did not like Him.

7. Jesus was crucified on a cross and then His body was taken to a tomb.

8. Jesus rose again from His tomb. He was the first to be resurrected and Christians believe that we can also be resurrected like he was when we die.

9. Jesus came to His apostles and told them to share His gospel (gospel means "good news") with everyone.

Now, whether you believe that story or not, you can still celebrate in your way, according to your faith, what it means to you to be new, clean, comforted, to have something to look forward to, to feel like no matter who you are or what you have done, you can change yourself in any way you believe possible.

To fellow Christians, please take the time this Easter season to read the story. I suggest the Book of Mark since it is shorter. Remember this, story, think about it, and hold on to the message. There are a lot of people who would try and discourage you from believing this. Satan is real, he will try and make you feel worthless, like you can not do anything. This is a total lie and Easter reminds us of this.

In finishing, I would like to share a short video that celebrates Easter which I think is beautiful.

Now, go off and enjoy your chocolate bunnies before somebody else does.
