He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After joining the Jesuits, he was ordained a priest in 1969 and elevated to the rank of cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. On March 13, 2013, he was elected pope in the aftermath of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation. He is the first pope from the Western Hemisphere and the first from the Society of Jesus, otherwise known as the Jesuits.
Over the last year, there has been speculation about his health, leading some to believe that, at 85 years of age, he may soon either die or retire.
