The caveat is gay couples cannot be blessed as one would a heterosexual couple during their wedding, or in anything resembling a wedding.

I was raised Catholic but have been non-denominational since college.
However I have a lot of relatives who are still Catholic and have been good friends with a priest (who is African American by the way) for a very long time. I am not going to disparage the church so keep your rude comments about Catholicism to yourself about what I am going to say next. Also I’m read fed up about hearing about “pedos” in the church. Yes that was a heinous scandal and it was rightfully exposed years ago. But this crap goes on all the time at secular public schools but there is far less attention national media attention on that because leftists control both public education and the MSM.
Anyway Pope Francis (and many other churches) think they can gain more support by going “woke” and defying biblical doctrine. Religious leaders think they can attract more followers that way by openly blessing sin. But when they do that a church is no longer a real church. People yearn for biblical truth and true spiritual guidance not a bunch of feel good lies.
So I predict this will only make fewer and fewer people support Catholicism. Not vice versa. That does not mean I hate gays. We are all God’s children. But there are very dire warnings about preaching false doctrine in the Bible.

From a humaniterian and human rights point of view, it's excellent as all humans irrespective of their sexual orientation deserve happiness and if marriage makes them happy then so be it. Marriage does carry with itself some socioeconomic and legal benefits which makes it attractive for some.
However, the issue here is that as priests aren't they bound by the scriptures and is the act scantioned by the scriptures? - I know for a fact that there is no Imam (Muslim clergy) that can do this, irrespective of which head of state or senior religious scholar tells them to as it's strictly forbidden by the Holy Quran. Hindus on the other hand can do it as Hindu scriptures contain nothing explicitly against homosexuality, but legally in India you can't get married. But you can have a ceremony and recieve blessings if not as a marriage then as a union, or new beginning in life.

This issue is in the Anglican Church in Wales, as well. They recently approved "blessing" of same-sex marriages, but not the sacrament of holy matrimony. They had more than 50% vote in favor of same-sex marriage at the last vote, but they need 2/3 of the vote before the synod will enact cannon law.
Personally, I feel like it's kind of a back-handed ploy for optics. "All are welcome... but some more than others." But, it's movement and bringing focus and opening a dialogue, for better or worse.

Even though it's not an actual seal of approval on same-sex marriage, it will still effectively give a green light (or at least turn a blind eye) to things that the Church had always taught to be sinful. The document in question, which I've intended to read in full, also doesn't issue any calls for repentance, amendment of life, conversion of heart or anything.
Also worth noting, I believe the document says "irregular unions", which would logically include sexually active male-female couples as well as couples living together before marriage. And even polygamy, as apparently in some parts of the world, even some Catholics are practicing such.
This decree will eventually be reversed and invalidated. Whether or not that happens in my lifetime though is anyone's guess.

He basically said they can INFORMALLY bless them. There is no way to formally bless something if does not meet the Church’s formal definition of matrimony. These officials can bless things at an unofficial capacity off the clock without fear of excommunication.

I am of the Catholic faith, Catholic education k-12 and I detest the Church while remaining a believer. This Pope is weak and divisive, in one breath he says maybe it's okay for same sex marriage and that we should be open and in the next he says being homosexual is still a sin. He excommunicates bishops and priests who criticize his political agenda as he panders to gain favor among European leaders. To stay on topic gay marriage is a divisive topic among the church. I personally don't care but you're talking a very long history of ideas and a few statements from the Pope will not change the long standing feelings especially far from Rome.
