If you grew up with your father in the home, and if you had a good relationship with him, then he probably was the most important man in your life. . . for a period of years. But, at some point, his importance assumed a lower position and another man, most likely a man near your age, became the most important guy in your life. When did that happen? When you started getting a crush on boys? When you started dating? First kiss? When you became sexually active? When you agreed to have an exclusive relationship? When you got engaged? How did your father respond to his loss of status in your life?

I think most people subscribe to the conventional wisdom: once a cheater, always a cheater. And if their partner cheated, they would immediately end their relationship. But some people say that they would try to forgive and continue the relationship, and especially if there are children involved.

I have never cheated on a partner, but I had two partners cheat on me. The first time, my girlfriend cheated with my roommate, and then they both confessed to me so they could shed some of their guilt. At that point, I decided that I had no future with the girl, but I remained with her just so I could use her for sex. And what was left of the relationship had no pretense of being exclusive. This happened about 44 years ago. If it happened now, I would respond with an immediate and total break up.

The second time, I was already in the process of a divorce when I learned that my wife had cheated while travelling a few months previously. We were already living separately so there was nothing I needed to do.

So, I've never forgiven a cheater and tried to return to a monogamous relationship. Have you? If so, did they cheat on you again? Are you still together or did you break up for some other reason?

I didn't get my first serious girlfriend until I was 29, almost 30. In fact, other than online attempts with girls where they rejected me upon meeting in person or short term dating where nothing transpired from it, I never had an actual girlfriend before that. Luckily and with the grace of God, I am now engaged. It is a huge relief.

This had caused so much grief, stress, and anguish over the years being single with no chance in sight of finding love. Shockingly, I was being looked at as the problem for being so depressed about it. I feel 100% that I was justified to feel this way, considering most humans start exploring romance and sex starting in middle or high school.

I wouldn't advocate for this to be the norm, especially for those who truly desire to have a significant other and a family in their lifetime. I know by the time I turned 29, I was already experiencing erectile dysfunction, libido issues, and low testosterone. Shit, for all I know, I can be infertile at this point. I didn't experience these issues up until recently.
